SEATTLE - A University of Washington rowing legend has passed away.

Lou Gellermann passed away Friday night at the age of 79, according to a release from the UW.

Inducted into the Husky Hall of Fame in 1984, Lou had a long history of victories on the water.

In 1958, Lou and the UW varsity team traveled to Moscow, where they beat the Soviets in the first sports event ever broadcast back to the United States from behind the Iron Curtain. The victory made international news and marked one of the biggest moments in the illustrious history of UW rowing.

Husky fans recognize Lou as a long-time announcer for the Husky Stadium. His signature opening line, "Hello Dawg Fans!" is still remembered fondly.

A Seattle native who attended Roosevelt High School, Lou rowed for four seasons at the UW and earned a degree in communications in 1958. He attended the 1960 Olympic Games in Rome as an alternate for the coxed four.
