Washington Senator Maria Cantwell had a chance to question one of President Trump's nominees for the Department of Energy before the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee on Thursday.

Senator Cantwell asked Anne Marie White about the department's ability to improve and maintain safety at Hanford in the Tri-Cities.

White has been nominated as assistant secretary for the Office of Environmental Management, which is tasked with nuclear weapon's site clean-ups.

That's important because of the on-going clean up at Hanford from plutonium dating back to the Cold War.

"This Office of Environmental Management is currently responsible for cleaning up 16 nuclear sites in 11 states, but none of these sites is larger more complex expensive or challenging than the Hanford site in the state of Washington," said Cantwell.

White still needs to be confirmed.
