Here's how much a ticket will raise your insurance rates

If you get a speeding ticket, there are ways to try to avoid skyrocketing insurance rates.
New numbers show how much a traffic citation will raise your insurance premiums in Washington state.

SEATTLE -- New numbers show just how much a traffic citation will raise your insurance premiums in Washington state.

Data from InsuranceQuotes.com shows speeding will increase Washington state drivers' insurance rates by more than 20 percent. For DWI violations and reckless driving, expect up to a 60 percent increase.

"It's so calculated how [the industry] determines rates," Seattle insurance agent Tom Spangler said.

Splanger sells insurance in Seattle's Capitol Hill neighborhood. He says the percentages of rate increases are constantly changing, but overall, Washington state is below the nationwide average for insurance costs. However, if you're caught speeding, Splanger has some advice.

"You want to fight," Spangler said. "For any speeding ticket you get, go down to see a judge about it, if it's a first-time offense. If it's not a first-time offense, you shouldn't be driving. If you're going to drive, you're going to pay for the insurance because insurance companies are not stupid."

If the violation is reported to your insurance company, experts with the Northwest Insurance Council say you should still give your agent a call and ask for a lower rate. If that fails, there might be a better place for your business.

"Rates vary from company to company as to the type of drivers that they will accept and write insurance on," explained Michael Walker with the Northwest Insurance Council. "So really, the best thing a consumer can do at that point is shop the insurance with different companies, and make sure they're getting the best value for their money."

Most Washington state traffic violations will be removed from driving records within three to five years.
