Hiker found dead on Mount Rainier

The body of Brian Grobois, 54, was located by helicopter in a remote area of upper Stevens Creek drainage on Monday evening.

SEATTLE -- The body of a hiker from New York was removed from Mount Rainier Tuesday.

The body of Brian Grobois, 54, was located by helicopter in a remote area of upper Stevens Creek drainage on Monday evening.

Park officials said search teams could not land on the ground due to approaching darkness and Grobois was unresponsive to the helicopter.

Tuesday, search teams were able to remove the body and transport it to Madigan Army Medical Center. Medical examiners said Grobois may have been dead for 24 hours.

The cause of death is unknown.

Grobois was visitng the area from New Rochelle, New York. He told family members about his planned hike to Paradise on Sunday. They notified park officials when Grobois failed to contact them later.

Park rangers and search teams from Joint Base Lewis-McChord aided in the search.
