Meet the couple who found a box of puppies abandoned at an Olympia trailhead

"Forest puppies," 11 of them, were found in a planter box.

THURSTON COUNTY, Wash. — Andrea and Kyle Jordan always look for wildlife while hiking on the McLane Creek Nature Trail. They were not expecting what they found the evening of Aug. 4.

"When we first walked up I heard a cry, it almost sounded like a baby or something,” said Kyle Jordan.

When Andrea Jordan looked inside a box left near the trailhead restroom, she saw it was full of 11 newborn puppies.

“I was like, ‘Oh my gosh, what are we going to do with all these puppies,” said Andrea Jordan.

The Hoquiam couple started driving the puppies - some with their umbilical cords attached  to Grays Harbor County, looking for puppy formula.

They posted photos online looking for help or advice.

”I saw this come through Facebook and said, ‘Oh no, why did I see this? I know I can’t say no,’ said Sue Meier, owner of Olympia’s Caring Hearts 4 Pets, a nonprofit dog foster home.

She picked up the puppies Sunday night and started feeding them formula and caring for them in an incubator.

Meier said one puppy died, but the other 10 are gaining weight and improving.

“I’m just so grateful they were found,” said Meier. “I can’t wait to watch them grow up into little fluff balls."

Meier said news of the discovery has resulted in thousands of dollars worth of donations.

The dogs should be available for adoption in October, said Meier.

She said if people want to help sooner, they could adopt one of the older dogs she has at her facility.

Meier hopes to get the other dogs adopted at an event Saturday, August 10, at the Olympia Tractor Supply at 4141 Martin Way East from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m.
