House collapses near Gig Harbor, killing 1

Officials say one person died when a house under construction collapsed on top of the workers.

MINTER, Wash. — A house under construction in Pierce County collapsed on workers Friday afternoon, killing one person, according to the Pierce County Sheriff's Department (PCSD).

The house was located in Minter, Washington, about 11 miles northwest of Gig Harbor. The construction workers were building a house when it collapsed on the workers around 1 p.m., according to public information officer Sgt. Darren Moss Jr.

One person was killed and one person was airlifted to the hospital, Moss said.

Key Peninsula Fire, along with Airlift NW and Gig Harbor Fire, transported one person to the hospital on what they called a "tough trauma call." The fire department also thanked Minter Creek Elementary for allowing the first responders to use its school field as an emergency landing location.

Details about what caused the house to collapse were not immediately available.

This is a developing story. Check back for updates.
