How will federal officials investigate Amtrak derailment?

Officials will go through a variety of factors, including speed, human error, and the track to determine a likely cause of the derailment.
A 14-car Amtrak train derailed between Tacoma and Olympia on Monday, killing several people and injuring dozens.

National Transportation Safety Board officials are launching an investigation into a high-speed Amtrak train that derailed between Tacoma and Olympia on Monday.

“We’ve launched a full go team with all the different types of experts,” said Bella Dinh-Zarr, an NTSB spokesperson.

Those experts include people with knowledge about the track, mechanics, signaling, and human factors, including engineer and crew performance.

Federal investigators will look at which factors could have contributed to the crash to determine a probable cause. They will examine things like signaling, breakage rates, and speed to assemble a likely scenario of how things happened.

NTSB officials from the Western Pacific Region, which is based in Federal Way, were on scene Monday, and rail experts from Washington D.C. arrived late Monday night.

Three people were killed, and about 70 people were taken to area hospitals after the train derailed.
