Human skull found in Kitsap County was 'sitting on shelf indoors for many years'

Neighbors in Kitsap County say a woman was putting up Christmas decorations on the outside of her fence when she found the skull.

TRACYTON, Wash. — A human skull found on the side of a busy road in Kitsap County was "likely a medical specimen at some point," according to the Kitsap County Sheriff's Office.

The skull, found on Dec. 3 in Tracyton, is believed to have been "sitting on a shelf indoors for many years" before being discovered. The skull was examined by the Kitsap County Medical Examiner's office.

The skull is being turned over to the Washington State Historical Anthropologist's Office for documentation and storage or disposal, according to the sheriff's office.

Neighbors previously told KING 5 a woman was hanging Christmas decorations on the outside of her fence when she found a human skull on the ground in Tracyton, which is near Bremerton.

There was no evidence of a crime and the sheriff's office previously said the skull may have been used for medical or teaching purposes.
