EVERETT, Wash. — Hundreds of people in Snohomish County have something to be thankful for after volunteers delivered meals to seniors and people with disabilities who are not able to leave their homes.
The non-profit Homage has been delivering Thanksgiving meals to these people for more than 20 years. This year around 150 volunteers took part in preparing and delivering 630 meals to 315 different people.
“Each person that we deliver to gets a friendly visit from a volunteer. They also get the traditional Thanksgiving meal and a day of leftovers that they can reheat tomorrow,” said Leah Hammon, the nutrition director at Homage.
Hammon said not only are many of these people alone and without family support, but they are also facing food insecurity. She said the need for food in the community is increasing.
“We've seen both a demand for an increase in our Meals on Wheels program, but also our community table dining program,” said Hammon.
Volunteers and people making sure the deliveries happen say they are happy to be spending their Thanksgiving morning making deliveries and prepping food because they want to make sure people in the community are being cared for.
“You want them to feel like a part of the community. We want them to be engaged,” said Hammon. “We want them to know that we're out there, that we care, and that somebody cares about them.”
Homage is still gathering donations to help pay off these Thanksgiving meals, people can donate here.
