KENT, Wash. — A Kent homeowner shot an intruder who broke into his bedroom early Tuesday morning, police said.
Officers responded to a home on 134th Avenue Southeast just before 1:30 a.m. Tuesday after a reported residential burglary. The caller told police he shot at a man who was inside his home but was not sure if he hit the suspect.
The homeowner, a 34-year-old man, told police he was sleeping in his bedroom with his wife when he was awoken by an unknown man entering the room and turning on the light. He told police the suspect fled the room when he noticed the couple and the homeowner grabbed his gun.
The man said he fired at the suspect but wasn't sure if he hit him. The homeowner told police he saw the suspect running out of their backyard. Investigators found items stolen from the home nearby as they searched the surrounding area.
Just after 3 a.m., officers were called to an apartment on Southeast 272nd Avenue for a medical call involving a man with a gunshot wound. Officers found a man matching the description of the burglar with a gunshot wound to the torso. The person who was shot, a 39-year-old Kent resident, was taken to the hospital for additional treatment.
Kent detectives are investigating the burglary and the shooting to determine whether they are connected. Police asked anyone who lives in the area of the burglary to see if they had any surveillance video of the man near their home Tuesday morning.
