Police exchange gunfire with suspect in Kent

The suspect died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound after firing shots from the upper story of a building in Kent.

KENT, Wash. — Police exchanged gunfire with a suspect in Kent early Wednesday morning.

The suspect later died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Kent Police Department officers responded to a call of around six or seven gunshots being fired from the upper story of a building on the 100 block of Madison Avenue North.

When officers arrived, they heard more gunshots that they believed were fired in their direction.

"One officer at least, we are still investigating, returned gunfire. We are not sure whether or not the officer actually hit the victim," said Kent Police Chief Rafael Padilla. "There is indication that the cause of death may have been a self-inflicted gunshot wound."

Officers cleared the building and identified one person who said he was the suspect's brother. He advised that the suspect had suffered a self-inflicted gunshot wound on an upper floor of the building.

Officers were able to enter the unit and provide aid until medics arrived, but the suspect was pronounced dead at the scene.

The Valley Independent Investigative Team is conducting the investigation into the incident. No officers were injured and the officer who returned fire has been placed on administrative leave per department protocol.

This is a developing story. Check back for updates.
