A suspect who was killed in a shooting involving a Sound Transit deputy Thursday in Kent was armed with an AR-15 rifle, according to the King County Sheriff's Office.
The deputy was on a routine patrol of the Kent Station parking garage around 8:45 a.m. when he saw a suspicious, occupied vehicle. He learned from dispatch the vehicle was stolen, according to Ryan Abbott, a spokesperson for the King County Sheriff’s Office.
The deputy tried to take the 18-year-old driver into custody, but the driver armed himself with the AR-15 rifle. The suspect and the deputy struggled inside and outside the vehicle, according to Abbott. The responding deputy fired a single shot, hitting the suspect in the driver’s seat.
The suspect was taken to Harborview Medical Center where he later died.
One other suspect in the vehicle, a 22-year-old, ran from the scene and was captured by Kent police officers a short distance away.
An 18-year-old suspect who was associated with the vehicle but not inside it at the time also fled and was arrested.
Those two suspects were arrested for investigation of possession of a stolen vehicle.
No deputies were injured.
The involved deputy is a 28-year veteran with the sheriff's office.
