KING 5 wins annual Windemere Cup media race

For the first time in 11 years, KING 5 won against three other local area TV stations.

SEATTLE — A trophy goes pretty well with crowns, don't you think?

On Tuesday, KING 5 won the annual Windemere Media Cup Race on the historic Montlake Cut near the University of Washington.

Hosted by Windermere Real Estate, the Windemere Cup is an annual rowing race founded in 1987. It has become one of the world's top rowing events and a favorite in the Seattle area. The Media Race kicks off the week's festivities. 

KING 5's team included Drew Andre, Adam Claibon, Mike Everett, Farah Jadran, Maddie White and Jake Whittenberg. The team's winnings will be donated to Northwest Harvest.

As with tradition, the team celebrated their win by throwing their coxswain into the water.

The 38th-annual Windemere Cup is Saturday, May 4 and nearly 800 athletes will compete, according to the event website. 

Competing this year are the men's and women's rowing teams from the University of Washington, the University of Wisconsin and the Italian National Team. 

The official races are Saturday, May 4. Crew races begin at 10:15 a.m. with a boat parade at noon. Awards take place at 12:30 p.m.
