A man was shot and killed by police Tuesday night at the Emerson Apartments in Kirkland.

The incident occurred shortly before 5 p.m. in the 11000 block of NE 114th Lane.

Officers originally responded to reports of screaming and possible shots fired in an apartment complex, according to Kirkland police.

One Kirkland police officer opened fire, hitting the man. He died at the scene.

“I knew they were gunshots right away because nothing else sounds like that” neighbor Mike DeVine explained.

DeVine said it sounded like there was a scream at the end of the shots and he was concerned about his neighbors.

“I had literally just walked back from the gym in the rec center, and there were kids playing in the parking lot just feet from where that happened," DeVine added. "And I hope they weren’t around for that because it wouldn’t have been good for them to see that.”

Ali Haider just dropped family members off right before the confrontation

“It’s nerve-wracking to know that what could have been if I had taken a different turn or I was 10 seconds later,” said Haider.

Officers at the scene recovered an assault rifle.

A spokesperson with the department was not sure if the suspect fired at police.
