The abandoned King County Eastside Rail Corridor is about to lose five miles of rail. The City of Kirkland, which bought the tracks through that community, decided to pull the rails to create a safer and smoother bike and pedestrian path.
Leaders said doing so would help spur economic growth in the Totem Lake and Houghton areas. But communities to the north argued pulling the track takes away a golden opportunity for a new rail that could move tourists and commuters.
Woodinville and Snohomish city leaders asked Kirkland to reconsider the plan, but at this point Kirkland officials are moving forward with the track removal.
They did say if a commuter package can be put together, they'd support it and there's room for both a path and a rail line.
