Kitsap County thaws out from significant snowfall

The Kitsap and Olympic peninsulas were hit especially hard by snowfall on Monday. But by Tuesday, warm air was turning most of the snow to slush on main roads and even side streets.

In Kitsap County, Tuesday brought temperatures soaring into the low 40s with a lot of snowmelt, after snow pummeled the west side of Puget Sound especially hard on Monday.

While many side streets and rural roads, especially parking lots, remain filled with deeply-rutted snow, it melted off major and even many secondary roads, especially after county road crews plowed them out.

On Monday, the storm brought warmer air and rain to Tacoma while leaving the Kitsap and Olympic peninsulas, east of the Olympic Mountains, with a lot of cold-trapped air.

The Kitsap County Sheriff’s office went as far as keeping non-essential personnel at home, and deputies with four-wheel drive vehicles drove 911 dispatchers and other essential personnel to work where needed.

Just 24 hours earlier, trees were bending and breaking under the weight of the snow, now those trees are largely snow free and standing tall.

It was a reversal from the day before, where temperatures in Snohomish County appeared to hover five or more degrees colder than Kitsap County cities like Kingston, at the other end of the ferry run.
