SEATTLE — As overnight temperatures drop to freezing levels, several shelters and warming centers are opening their doors to welcome people needing an escape from the cold.
Temperatures are expected to reach the low to mid-30s on Wednesday night and only rise to about the mid-40s on Thursday.
King County Regional Homelessness Authority has activated its Tier 2 severe weather response, which occurs when daily low temperatures are predicted to be at or below 35 degrees for three days.
The advisory is extended to the morning of Wednesday, Dec. 4, meaning additional 24/7 shelters are open due to cold temperatures.
Outside the Salvation Army in SODO, a handful of people lined up just before 7 p.m. on Tuesday to take advantage of the overnight warming center.
"I'm out here because I'm homeless, on the streets and always looking for shelters," said Paul, who did not provide his last name. "It gets cold. I gotta find a shelter where it's warm."
He's become familiar with the cold weather protocols set forth by the county, allowing people to seek warmth at various shelters.
"I'm thankful they're helping out. I'm always looking for shelters and helping others look for shelters," Paul said.
This list includes information for shelters available through Dec. 4; beyond this date, shelter services may have changed.
