Local volunteers mobilize to help as Hurricane Milton makes landfall in Florida

Volunteers and supplies are being sent from Washington state to help those impacted in Florida.

FIFE, Wash. — On Wednesday, World Vision focused on getting items like generators, bottled water, and blankets out of its Fife warehouse and on a truck bound for Florida as Hurricane Milton threatened the state.

The nonprofit organization is on a mission to send help and hope. The supplies are being shipped today, and Roberta Taylor, a World Vision site manager, will be headed south Oct. 10.

"When I got the call, I'm like yes, whatever it takes. 'Are you willing to take a red eye?' Absolutely, whatever it takes to get there to be able to help,'" said Taylor.

Hurricane Milton, a Category 3 hurricane, made landfall Wednesday evening.

"With this one, this is just taking it to that next level,” said Betsy Robertson with the Northwest Region of the American Red Cross.

Robertson said they have sent dozens of volunteers to help with hurricane relief. Right now, the Red Cross is also rallying to get more resources.

"None of the work that we do is done without donations. So financial gifts and volunteers,” said Robertson. "Now is a great time to please consider giving blood."

"We had Helene just within the last two weeks. Now we've got Milton. This is a historic response on every level,” Robertson added.

"Just knowing that some of the same people may be impacted again is definitely heartbreaking,” said Taylor.

The Red Cross is sharing ways people can help on its website.
