A Lummi Nation tribal member was injured during a mass shooting at a concert in Las Vegas on Sunday evening that left 58 dead and more than 500 injured.
According to family, Melinda Brockie attended the Route 91 Harvest Music Festival with her husband, Travis, who is a Lummi councilmember. The two were celebrating another couple’s wedding anniversary.
Melinda, who goes by Mia, was shot in the face. The mother of two boys is currently unconscious in a Las Vegas ICU, but is expected to survive.
“To hear that she's coming home, all we can do is be grateful. It's gonna be a long healing road, but there is lots of support here. We are thankful to God,” said family member Sarah Gray.
“You almost feel like you can't even go to the movies or go to a football game anymore without having to take that risk. It shouldn’t be like that,” said family member Crystal Lawrence.
A GoFundMe account has been set up to help the Brockie family with travel and other expenses.
“We are very thankful for all of the love, support, and prayers being shared with the family as we try to understand how something this horrible could happen to such a beautiful soul. We are raising funds for her two sons and members of her immediate family that are traveling to Nevada to stand by her side as she recovers,“ a statement on the GoFundMe said.
As of 1:45 p.m. Monday, the account had reached $2,800 of its $10,000 goal.
A PayPal account has also been activated for the family. To donate, use the email Quatise25@gmail.com.
