Machinists withdraw request for SC Boeing union vote

The Machinists union blames an atmosphere of threats, harassment and unprecedented political interference that has intimidated workers.

CHARLESTON, S.C. - The Machinists union is withdrawing its request to hold a union vote next week for production workers at Boeing manufacturing operations in North Charleston.

In a statement released Friday, the union said it is withdrawing its request for the vote because of what it called "a toxic environment."

Union organizer Mike Evans said that what he called an atmosphere of threats, harassment and unprecedented political interference has intimidated workers and a fair election is not possible.

The vote had been set for Wednesday. Withdrawing the petition means the vote cannot be held for at least six months.

Gov. Nikki Haley has urged workers to vote against the union. Almost 3,200 of the approximately 7,500 Boeing South Carolina workers were eligible to vote.
