A 78-year-old man died Saturday after he fell through ice on a pond while he was skating with his grandson.
The Thurston County Sheriff's Office said they received a 911 call at about 11 .m. A 78-year-old man was skating with his grandson on a frozen pond on a ranch outside of Yelm.
The man fell through the ice at a weak point and did not resurface. No one at the ranch was able to safely rescue the man.
Lacey fire department personnel also responded but they were unable to get to him as well since he was still underwater.
A Thurston County Sheriff's Deputy who had responded and is also on the dive team quickly suited up and went into the water. He was able to recover the man, who was in about 6-8 feet of water.
The man was non-responsive and did not have a pulse.
