Whatcom County Sheriff Bill Elfo said the suspect who reportedly fired shots at U.S. Border Patrol agents on Tuesday has been captured.
The fleeing suspect was tracked to a home in Abbotsford, British Columbia, just across the border from Sumas. He was arrested at a residence at 4:30 a.m. Wednesday, police said.
The man is a Canadian with a criminal history, but his name won't be released until he is charged, said Constable Ian MacDonald. He didn't say if a gun was recovered.
The man arrested Tuesday was making his first court appearance Wednesday afternoon in federal court in Seattle.
The 58 pounds of drugs found in the backpacks was described as an amphetamine-based product.
The manhunt stretched overnight at the Canadian border after shots were fired at U.S. Border Patrol agents near the crossing at Sumas. Multiple local and national law enforcement agents searched both sides of the border on the ground and by helicopter.
Law enforcement on both sides of the border searched for the a man who fired on a pair of agents.
