SEATTLE -- Nearly 35 million Americans will travel this Memorial Day weekend. In Washington, many of those travelers will rely on the state's ferry system.
Travelers should expect long lines at the ferries, especially in Mukilteo, Edmonds and on the Port Townsend route, advised WSDOT. Several commuters Friday morning said they left early because they know how holiday traffic really impacts the ferry system.
In the afternoon, two to three hour waits are common on weekends like this, according to a ferry system spokesperson, so drivers should anticipate delays.
On Friday afternoon and evening and Saturday morning, westbound traffic will be heavy. On Monday expect longer than usual waits for eastbound traffic.
Reservations are recommended for this weekend. Some routes like Sidney, B.C., to Anacortes are already full for Memorial Day.
To check ferry schedules, go to the Washington State Ferries website. Look closely because some routes will be on regular schedule, while others on holiday schedule. You can also call 5-1-1 this weekend for the latest travel information.
