A nonprofit organization in Tacoma is hosting a series of evening events designed to give parents and their children the opportunity to sit down and have important conversations.
Starting on Nov. 20 - Mi Centro will host "Cafecito y Chisme" (coffee and gossip). Each of the four evenings will be open to parents and their children and teens.
While enjoying some hot drinks and sweets in a safe place, Mi Centro will facilitate conversation-starters and guided dialogue in English and Spanish.
Michelle Camacho, the center's domestic violence preventionist, visits many schools with educational presentations. She sees firsthand how crucial communication is with younger generations.
Camacho talks to students about healthy relationships.
"The conversation needs to start at home," Camacho said. "Most parents don't know how to start the conversation."
Cafecito y Chisme sessions will give adults and youth the tools they need to improve their communication skills.
The sessions will be held from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. at Mi Centro on Nov 20 and 27, and Dec. 4 and Dec. 11.
Topics can be seen below in Mi Centro's Instagram post.
The topics include building healthy relationships, managing stress and anger, talking to children about domestic violence, and modeling respect and equality.
Mi Centro also offers several other events and services including victims of crimes services, small business workshops, arts, holiday events such as the annual Posadas (Dec.14) celebration and a FAFSA help session (Dec. 7) to help bilingual parents.
