NEWMAN LAKE, Wash. -- A mother suffered third degree burns while trying to get her children to safety when their Newman Lake home caught fire early Saturday morning.
Officials were called to a home on North Starr Road near East Dalke Avenue for a report of a fire around midnight. Crews saw heavy smoke and flames coming from one end of the home.
Crews said a passerby saw the fire, called 911, went to see if everyone was ok and found the mother passed out at the doorway. The passerby then moved the mother away from the home.
Authorities said the mother had safely gotten two of her children out of the home when the fire began. She went back in the home to get her 7-year-old child and she was badly burned, according to the fire marshal.
Paramedics and AMR crews immediately assessed, treated and transported the family to a local hospital. The mother and the 7-year-old have been transported to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle. The youngest member of the family, a 17-month-old, was said to be ok.
Fire crews were able to quickly knock down the fire. Authorities said there were no smoke detectors in the home. The home was under renovations.
The cause is under investigation. Authorities said the damage to the home was extensive.
