SUMNER, Wash. — In neighborhoods around Sumner, residents are cleaning up remnants of a crime spree.
Early Monday morning, around a dozen vehicles, including the patrol vehicle of a Pierce County Sheriff's deputy, were broken into and their windows smashed, according to the Sumner Police Department.
Police said the break-ins all happened within the span of one hour. Investigators believe four to six juveniles are responsible.
One the victims, Brian Hall, spent the day watching his truck get a new window installed as he recounted the morning’s events.
“At 4:26, we kind of knew they were here in the neighborhood, doing whatever they were doing,” Hall recalled. “So it was between when my neighbor left at 4:15 and I left at 4:41, they hit mine and my neighbor’s car.”
The City of Sumner released surveillance camera footage of one of the incidents on its website.
The video shows two dark colored vehicles arriving at an intersection, and making a stop in the middle of the street soon after making a right turn. Then, the vehicles speed away, leaving victims like Hall with an unexpected expense.
Hall said while he still believes his neighborhood is generally safe, there’s only so much you can do to stop this type of crime.
“I don’t know what can be done about it except for more cameras, to take better pictures to pick up a license plate or something, but other than that, I don’t know if there’s anything we can do except for lock our doors,” he said.
Investigators also said there’s a possibility that the break ins are related to incidents in both Puyallup and Renton. The Sumner Police Department is calling on anyone with information about these break-ins to reach out to them as soon as possible.
