Nearly three dozen families face eviction in Kirkland

A mobile home park in Kirkland has been sold to a developer who plans to build nearly 20 homes on the same land.

Thirty-two families have eviction notices after the landlord of their mobile home park informed them that the park has been sold and they have one year to move.

The Firwood Lane Mobile Home Park is on more than three acres in Kirkland and sold for more than $3 million to a developer from Austin, Texas who plans to build nearly 20 homes on the land. The current tenants have until April 30, 2016 to move.

Ron Brown is a 76-year-old Air Force Veteran who is suffering from COPD and lives on a fixed income. Among the many other challenges he faces, Brown is now faced with a new one after his eviction notice showed up on his door a few weeks ago.

"I'm 76 years old I don't want to move," Brown said. "People out here are going to have to come up with the money to move and people out here don't have the money to move."

Brown said relocation costs for his double wide trailer could reach as much as 15,000. Several single wide trailers will have a hard time finding a new place because many of them are not allowed anymore at mobile home parks.

"I know he can find a place to go, but I don't know how soon," Brown's son Mike said. "I don't know if it's going to be a last ditch effort to get out of here or whether he can find something early enough."

Brown said he plans to be at the Kirkland City Council meeting on June 2 to hopefully change their mind at the last minute, but at this point the most he expects his some assistance for relocation.

"It's a hardship on me and everyone else in this trailer court," Brown said. "We never saw it coming at all."
