Washingtonians, get ready for a new area code.
The state Utilities and Transportation Commission on Thursday approved a plan that would implement the new area code 564 across Western Washington.
The 564 area code will apply to all Western Washington numbers, including the 360, 206, 253 and 425 area codes, as numbers in the areas become exhausted.
Officials project the 360 area code will be out of numbers by early 2018. The 564 area code will be distributed starting in the fall of 2017 to new numbers in the 360 area code.
The commission also approved mandatory 10-digit dialing for all Western Washington area codes by fall of 2017. That means callers will need to dial the area code when making local calls.
