North Bend brewery names new beer after recent break-in

Around Feb. 1, someone broke into Volition Brewing and stole about $1,000 in quarters. The brewery decided to cash in on the crime.

NORTH BEND, Wash. — A popular brewery in North Bend isn’t letting a recent break-in get their hops down.

Volition Brewing Co. decided to make light of the crime and name their new beer “Quarter Bandit” after someone broke in and stole their till and their pinball change machine.

The crime happened between late Wednesday night and early Thursday morning. The thief got away with nearly $1,000 in quarters. The till did not have any cash inside.

“Somebody had been in the building over the evening time and thrown papers and chairs around and stole our till which had zero dollars in it and our pinball change machine which had probably 1,000 dollars in it mostly quarters, unfortunately for them,” said Lucas Haines, the co-owner of Volition.

Haines and his team had the brilliant idea to cash in on their temporarily cashless business by naming their new double IPA beer after the crime.

“It’s full of notes of disdain and disappointment,” Haines said with a laugh.

Haines says the “Quarter Bandit” tastes delightful. Their new beer is bringing in a large crowd.

“More power to them, I thought it was super clever to embrace the moment to turn it into something positive, something good,” said Roberta McFarland, a regular customer at the brewery.

Seeing the community support the day after someone decided to steal their money has the team feeling hopeful.

“North Bend loves beer, they love pinball, they love Volition and we love them just as much as they love us,” said Haines.

The brewery is only accepting payments by card until their new machines are up and running.
