D-Day veteran remembers smells, sights of invasion

Saturday marks the 71st anniversary of the invasion of Normandy, France.
It's been more than 70 years, but George Narozonick remembers plenty from that morning in Normandy, France.

OLYMPIA, Wash. -- It's been more than 70 years, but George Narozonick remembers plenty from that morning in Normandy.

Especially the smell.

"Gunpowder," said Narozonick, "from our own (guns), from the Germans."

Saturday marks the 71st anniversary of the Allied invasion into France.

Narozonick is one of several Washingtonians being honored by the Secretary of State's "Washington Remembers" program.

Narozonick is proud of his service, but don't call him a hero.

"God no. I was just part of the team," said Narozonick.

He enjoys telling war stories - not to brag, but to make sure Americans don't forget what he fought for and what his friends died for.

"It's enough to cry over," he said, "if we lost it."
