Investigators on Friday released surveillance video from an Olympia Safeway store showing two men who allegedly attempted to shoplift beer and assault an employee.
The two men in the video are believed to be the stepbrothers shot by an Olympia Police officer early Thursday morning.
The clips show the men hanging out near the entrance of the store before one goes inside. Both men are carrying skateboards.
In the surveillance footage, the man who entered the store is then shown walking toward an exit carrying a box of bottled beer and a skateboard.
A Safeway employee is seen trying to intercept the man, who then throws the box of beer in the employee's direction. The employee deflects the box with her hands as the man runs out of the store.
An officer investigating the incident is believed to have shot the two men depicted in the video about 20 minutes later.
When the officer stopped the two men suspected of assault and shoplifting, he reported that one of the men assaulted him with a skateboard.
Following the attempted theft, a clerk from Safeway called 911.
KING 5 News is not identifying the employee.
She described the men to the dispatcher, noting they both had skateboards.
She said she recognized one of the men.
"He stole a beer earlier and he tried to do it again. He threw the beer at me and hit my hand," she told the dispatcher.
Back at the shooting scene neighbors who heard the shots said they were still on edge.
"We're still all rattled in this hood," said Brooke Johnson, who said she heard three bursts of gunfire.
She was concerned for the safety of her twin sons, who have rooms facing the road where the shooting happened.
A neighbor across the street had a front window blown out by one of the officer's shots.
"It's certainly tragic for everybody, including the cop," said Johnson.
Olympia Police Chief Ronnie Roberts identified the two men shot as Andre Thompson, 23, and Bryson Chaplin, 21.
