Stacey McShane says a deadly drunk driving accident devastated her family in 2010.
"We don't want anybody to be standing at the grave of a young man. It's a horrible experience," she said.
McShane says the crash happened on Interstate 5 near Southcenter.
"My husband's cousin was killed by a DUI driver," said McShane.
Nick Hodgins was 18-years-old when it happened. He was just a few days shy of his high school graduation. His friend, Derek King, was also killed that night when a drunk driver crashed into them.
"We were supposed to be at his graduation party and instead we were at his funeral," she said.
That reality led her to a new line of work. In 2016, McShane, a 911 dispatcher for 20 years, was hired as the Target Zero Manager for the Snohomish County DUI and Target Zero Task Force.
These days, she often shares her story with students on high school campuses.
Friday night she stood before police officers, deputies, and state troopers, briefing them before a major DUI emphasis.
McShane sees it as work that will save lives.
"I just don't want any other family to go through what our family has gone through," she said.
McShane has been the task force manager since 2016. In one year's time, the team made 759 DUI arrests.
