Kangaroo eludes deputies in Pierce County before eventual capture

The kangaroo was located and eventually corraled in Parkland.

PARKLAND, Wash. — Pierce County Sheriff's Department (PCSD) deputies were led on a wild kangaroo chase Sunday morning in Parkland.

Deputies were called to a traffic hazard around 6:39 a.m. Sunday along with Washington State Patrol, where they encountered what was initially believed to be a wallaby.

PCSD says after "several attempts," the animal was tackled by deputies. Body camera video shared by the department shows one of the attempts, where the animal can be seen hopping away from deputies after trying to corner it.

"No Deputies, Troopers or Wallabys were hurt in today’s incident," said PCSD.

PCSD said the animal belonged to Debbie Doolittle's Petting Zoo in Tacoma and was returned. In a late-morning Facebook post on Sunday, the petting zoo said its kangaroo was actually at the Puyallup fairgrounds that morning for the "reptile expo."

KING 5 has reached out to PCSD for further clarification on where the animal ended up after being captured.

Both the Point Defiance Zoo and Woodland Park Zoo tell KING 5 that the animal seen in the PCSD videos is a kangaroo and not a wallaby.
