BLYN, Wash. — A pilot died after their plane crashed near Blyn in Jefferson County on Wednesday.
A witness reported seeing a low-flying aircraft with a possible engine spluttering and hearing a crash around 3:10 p.m., according to the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office (JCSO).
There was significant fog in the area at the time that hampered rescue crews. JCSO searched the area by car and drone for the wreckage and also reached out to the U.S. Navy Whidbey Island Search and Rescue for help.
Reports from the community of what they had seen helped crews narrow in on the location of the crash, JCSO said.
It is believed that the pilot had taken off from Friday Harbor and was headed to Olympia.
Search and Rescue was able to locate the plane, a single-engine Cirrus SR22. The pilot, who was found dead at the scene, was identified Thursday as 66-year-old David W. Hodges. He's believed to be the only passenger.
The crash is currently under investigation by the National Transportation Safety Board and the Federal Aviation Administration.
