Pilot killed in Whidbey Island plane crash identified

One person was killed in the crash of a small plane on Whidbey Island on Thursday afternoon.

WHIDBEY ISLAND, Wash. One person was killed in the crash of a small plane on Whidbey Island on Thursday afternoon.

The Island County Sheriff's Office has identified the pilot as Michael Scovill Heaton Sr.

The crash happened around 4 p.m. The PA 28 belonged to the Naval Air Station Flying Club and was on a round-robin flight from Whidbey, to Bellingham, to Paine Field and back to Whidbey, the FAA said.

We got second-hand information that witnesses indicated that they heard a power failure in the engine, said Mike Fergus with the FAA.

Island Co Sheriff Mark C. Brown saidHeaton was only one person onboard the plane when it crashed at Fort Ebey.

The cause of the crash is not yet known.
