SEATTLE — A Seattle art gallery was damaged after a fire broke out early Friday morning.
At around 6:30 a.m., the Seattle Fire Department received 911 calls about a fire at a commercial building in Pioneer Square at 300 Occidental Avenue South. They worked to extinguish the flames, and the fire was under control by 8 a.m.
No one was inside the gallery when the fire broke out and no injuries were reported.
The building and many art pieces were damaged in the fire at an estimated cost of $1 million. The gallery said a Picasso etching and Rembrandt were inside.
Davidson Galleries owner Rebecca McDonald praised the responding firefighters for their hard work.
"They understood that they were in an art gallery with works on paper and they didn't spray water wantonly. They really tried to save, they were heartbroken when they realized what was going on," she said.
No other businesses nearby were damaged. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
