TACOMA, Wash. — A private fireworks show near the Port of Tacoma took place on Saturday night, echoing for miles and surprising some residents.

The private fireworks display began around 9 p.m. on a barge in Commencement Bay and lasted approximately 20 minutes.

Tacoma Fire Department Public Information Officer Chelsea Shepherd said the fire department was aware of the display and had Fireboat Destiny on standby.

The United States Coast Guard alerted the public on Sept. 25 with a notice of the event. The Coast Guard established a temporary water safety zone near the fireworks display from 8 p.m. to 10 p.m. Saturday.

The safety zone is intended to protect people, vessels and the marine environment in the waters during the fireworks show.
