'Clam Lights' at Renton park impacted by theft

A city employee reported someone stolen at least $30,000 worth of electrical wiring that powers the display.

RENTON, Wash. — Recent theft is impacting the "Clam Lights" display at Renton's Gene Coulon Memorial Beach Park.

On Dec. 10, an officer responded to the park for a report of a theft. A city employee reported someone stolen at least $30,000 worth of electrical wiring that powers the display.

According to police, the theft occurred sometime between 11 p.m. on Dec. 8 and around 2 p.m. on Dec. 9. There is no suspect information at this time and people with information are asked to call police.

Marcie Palmer has lived in Renton for nearly 40 years. She and families throughout the area have visited the lights for decades. She said visiting the lights is a tradition for many families.

"Who does that? What kind of a person would come in and ruin such a beautiful display?" she said.

Though some of the lights aren't working, part of the display is still lit up.

The lights will be lit daily from 5-9 p.m. through Jan. 5.
