SDOT contract worker killed in lift accident on West Seattle Bridge

A Seattle Department of Transportation contract worker was killed Friday after an incident on a westbound exit ramp of the West Seattle Bridge.

SEATTLE – A Seattle Department of Transportation contract worker was killed Friday after an incident on a westbound exit ramp of the West Seattle Bridge.

Police say a box truck struck a lift two workers were on, sending one worker 15 feet to the exit ramp below, and the other 50 feet to the ground below the bridge deck.

Both workers were transported to Harborview Medical Center. One of the workers was later pronounced dead at the hospital. The other was in serious condition.

Washington State Department of Labor and Industries and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration will be investigating.

The truck that hit the lift was making a delivery for Ostrom Mushrooms, an Olympia grower.

“My understanding is he didn’t see anything,” said Fletcher Street, Director of Sales and Marketing at Ostrom Mushroom Farms.

The driver, who was not cited by police, told his supervisor that he did not see a flagger or any caution signs in the moments before the collision, Street said.
