SEATTLE -- The Moby Duck, the Seafair Pirates ship that's been out of commission since it caught fire in October, was back on Seattle streets Sunday as the pirates kicked off Seafair at Alki Beach.
The pirates use the 32-foot amphibious vehicle, which could once float on water and drive down the street, for their annual storming of the West Seattle beach. Last October, an explosion in the engine caused extensive damage to the wiring and deck. Pirate crews have spent the last nine months repairing the Moby Duck, built back in 1942 for military use in World War II.
She's 100 percent new, said Barnacle, Seafair pirate. She has a new Chevy 454 in her. She's got a brand new deck, brand new wiring, paint job. We're real proud of where she's at now.
Barnacle said there's a few things that still need finishing up, such as the hot tub and stereo. But they're just happy she's up and running.
We were still turning wrenches the other night. It's a miracle that she's here, he said.
Barnacle said the Moby Duck can no longer go on the water, but she'll still be able to cruise the streets for pirates plundering.
I don't know about miles, but we're hoping she lasts for another 62 years, said Barnacle.
