The Showbox, near Seattle's Pike Place Market, could be turned into a landmark next month.

It was announced on Monday that the Landmarks Preservation Board would consider the building for landmark status on June 5.

In an effort to save the longtime music venue in downtown Seattle, supporters turned to the board after it was announced last July that the building that houses The Showbox could be turned into a high-rise apartment building with retail space.

The meeting to consider landmark status will be held in Seattle City Hall at 3:30 p.m. Public comment will be open during the meeting and anyone unable to attend can mail comments in by May 30.

Last year, Seattle City Council passed an ordinance allowing a temporary expansion of Pike Place Market Historical District to include The Showbox -- putting off any redevelopment for ten months.

On Monday, the same day it was announced the Landmarks Preservation Board would consider landmark status on the building, the city council introduced legislation to amend the ordinance, extending the expansion by six months.

The legislation reads in part, "The City is currently engaging in the analysis necessary to consider a permanent boundary expansion, but this work is not anticipated to be completed by the time the initial ten-month interim expansion expires on July 23, 2019."

A public hearing will be held on May 31.
