Seattle-based Native Youth Rise Above nonprofit to have first-time charity team at NYC Marathon

The Nov. 3 marathon is expected to have more than 50,000 runners at the line from around the world.

SEATTLE — Running 26.2 miles is a big commitment for anyone, but for a small group of Washingtonians, lacing up for a marathon is part of a mission.

For the first time, Native Youth Rise Above, a Seattle-based nonprofit, will have a recognized TCS NYC Road Runners charity team at the Nov. 3 NYC Marathon.

Being recognized as an official fundraising organization in the NYC Marathon is a proud achievement and a way to bring awareness to the needs of Native youth, according to Natalie Welch, the executive director of Rise Above.

Welch will be running on the charity team.

The nonprofit is nearing its 10th anniversary.

It was started by Jaci McCormack and Brad Meyers, to better support Native Youth, a group organization leaders say is under-served and under-represented.

Rise Above works with partners, schools and tribes to build specific programs to support Native Youth in positive experiences and serring future goals.

Currently, the organization has partnerships with professional teams and athletes. There are several Seattle Storm Basketball camps set for the coming weeks. The nonprofit said programs like these are positive to invite Native youth to hone their skills on and off the court.

The running team heading to New York City includes KING 5 reporter Bridget Chavez. KING 5 will be cheering her on from the Pacific Northwest!
