Chief Sealth International student dies in shooting at West Seattle recreation center

The fatal incident happened at the Southwest Pool in West Seattle.

SEATTLE — A teenage boy died in a shooting at West Seattle’s Southwest Pool and Teen Life Center on Tuesday afternoon, according to the Seattle Police Department (SPD).

Officers responded to the 2800 block of Southwest Thistle Street, which houses the Southwest Teen Life Center and Southwest Pool, around 1:30 p.m. for reports of a shooting inside a bathroom at the facility, police said. The incident occurred on the pool side of the complex, according to the City of Seattle's public affairs manager.

Seattle Fire Department crews attempted life-saving measures, but the teenage boy died at the scene. As of Thursday, the 15-year-old boy's cause and manner of death remain pending from the King County Medical Examiner's Office.

Police said there were no reports of an altercation leading up to the shooting and are continuing to search for the weapon used in the shooting.

The Southwest Teen Life Center and the Southwest Pool are City of Seattle-operated facilities. According to Seattle Parks and Recreation, the teen center and the pool remain closed until Friday.

In a letter to parents, the chief of staff for Seattle Public Schools identified the victim as a Chief Sealth International High School student. They notified students that they would see an increased presence of police officers and school security staff on campus Wednesday.

The district said resources are available to help support the community.
