Bystander injured in shooting at Seattle's Hing Hay Park

The woman injured in the shooting was not the intended target, police said.

SEATTLE — A woman was injured in a shooting at Seattle's Hing Hay Park on Sunday night, according to the Seattle Police Department (SPD).

Police received a call at around 10:15 p.m. about reports of a shooting at the park at 423 Maynard Avenue South. When officers arrived they found a 57-year-old woman with a gunshot wound to the abdomen. She was taken to Harborview Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries.

Police said a "disturbance" at the park amongst a group of people escalated. A suspect pulled out a gun and fired off multiple shots, accidentally striking the victim who was not the intended target.

Officers were able to find the suspect loitering near the shooting scene with the help of a witness. He was arrested and is expected to be booked into King County Jail.

Police conducted an "extensive" evidence search but were not able to find the gun. The Gun Violence Reduction unit will be leading the investigation.

Hang Luc, co-owner of New An Dong, has experienced the ups and downs of Seattle's Chinatown International District.

"We got a really bad rep," Luc said. "And people get scared and all that and so when I hear this I'm like oh no not again. Because when customers get scared they're not going to come down."

Luc's family has owned this herb store for over 40 years and has seen issues at the park persist.

"A lot of transients, drugs, people who drink alcohol," Luc said. "And I do complain sometimes, and I call the police and their excuse is "They have rights too." but they don't have rights to break the law."

According to the police crime dashboard, overall violent crime in the CID is slightly down from last year. However, there have been three homicides this year when there were none in 2023.
