Driver dies after crash sends vehicle onto I-5 guardrail in Seattle

The car was sent up onto the concrete barrier on Interstate 5 just south of the Mercer Street exit in downtown Seattle.

SEATTLE — One person died after an accident sent their vehicle onto a concrete barrier on Interstate 5 in downtown Seattle Monday morning.

The car was towed away shortly before 11:30 a.m., and all lanes reopened.

According to the Washington State Patrol, crews were able to extricate the 55-year-old man from his truck and take him to Harborview Medical Center, where he was in critical condition until he died hours later.

The accident prompted a large response from law enforcement, medical and traffic personnel.

Drivers were asked to take other routes if possible and stay alert if traveling through the area. At one point, the crash blocked three lanes. As of 11:25 a.m., the backup had reached about 4 miles.
