SEATTLE - Work is beginning on a major redesign of Jimi Hendrix Park in Seattle's Central District, where the famed guitarist grew up.
Seattle Parks and Recreation says it's an effort to transform the park into a celebratory space worthy of its namesake.
The Jimi Hendrix Park Foundation, led by Jimi Hendrix's sister, Janie, raised $1.4 million for the first phase of construction, which will include a new entrance, paved pathways, a chronological timeline of Jimi's life and career, a butterfly garden, and a central plaza for community gatherings and performances.
Fundraising is underway for phase two, which calls for additional pathways, pedestrian lighting, improved fencing and the centerpiece feature, a "shadow wave wall" depicting iconic silhouettes of Hendrix.
The 2.5-acre green space is adjacent to the Northwest African American Museum.
