Damaged crane at Husky Stadium could delay project

State inspectors are concerned that the demolition of Husky Stadium's roof on Tuesday resulted in damage to a large crane being used in the project.

SEATTLE -- State inspectors are concerned that the demolition of Husky Stadium's roof on Tuesday resulted in damage to a large crane being used in the project.

Witnesses said the crane could be seen shaking during a controlled collapse of the stadium's south grandstand roof.

There were no injuries and the crane did not collapse. But the Washington State Department of Labor and Industries (L&I) on Wednesday opened an investigation into Ness Cranes to find out more about how and what happened.

The state could also open up investigations into the general contractor and engineering firm working on the project.

The state has up to six months to complete its investigations and could delay the project if problems are found.

Turner Construction, the general constructor, expects no delays in the stadium renovation.

Demolition of the old Husky Stadium will continue, but the crane involved in Tuesday's incident is out of commission until it is recertified or replaced. The $250 million stadium renovation began on November 7; the upgraded stadium is set to reopen in September 2013.
