Interim Seattle Police Chief Carmen Best sworn in

Carmen Best will lead the department until a committee has chosen a permanent replacement.

Carmen Best was sworn in Tuesday as the Interim Police Chief for the Seattle Police Department.

Seattle Mayor Jenny Durkan swore in Best during the morning roll call at the East Precinct.

Best is set to replace Kathleen O'Toole who announced she was stepping down as police chief in November.

Best has been with the Seattle Police Department for 26 years. She recently served as Deputy Police Chief under O'Toole.

In a message written on the Seattle Police Department website, Best announced a reduction in crime and disorder; excellence in service; honor and professionalism; business efficiency; and data driven policies and practices as the chief objectives of the department under her leadership.

"I will continue to work tirelessly to ensure we are meeting our community's expectations, while also leading the way in 21st century policing," said Best.

Best will serve until a permanent replacement for O'Toole is selected.

Durkan recently announced the members of the committee that will find a permanent replacement for O'Toole.
