SEATTLE -- Seattle Mayor Ed Murray does not support a bill to divide the Seattle School District into two districts.
Some state lawmakers want to break up the Seattle School District.
The bill, introduced by Seattle Democrats, Rep. Sharon Tomiko Santos and Rep. Eric Pettigrew, would split the district starting in 2018.
They say it would help eliminate inequality at Seattle schools.
The Seattle School District issued this statement: "Dividing Seattle Public Schools into two distinct districts would increase fiscal costs to taxpayers and create operational inefficiencies."
Mayor Murray says he's not supporting the bill.
"A lot of how school districts run is based on property tax and I think we would have one district property tax rich and another property tax poor," said Murray.
