Motorcyclist and passenger dead after crashing into Seattle Fire Department truck

The Seattle Fire truck was responding to an emergency call at the time of the collision.

SEATTLE — A motorcyclist and a passenger are both dead after crashing into the side of a Seattle Fire truck early Monday morning.

The collision happened at around 3:16 a.m. A motorcyclist was traveling eastbound on West Prospect Street at a high rate of speed and crashed into the side of a Seattle Fire Department (SFD) truck headed southbound on Queen Anne Avenue North.

The motorcyclist was pronounced dead at the scene. The passenger received aid from Seattle Fire Department (SFD) personnel and was taken to Harborview Medical Center, where they later died from their injuries. Both were men in their 30s.

No SFD personnel were injured in the collision.

Seattle Police Department (SPD) Det. Eric Munoz said the fire truck was responding to an emergency call and had its lights activated when the collision happened. The SFD truck had the right of way in the intersection.

"This is probably one of those worst-case scenarios," Munoz said. "This is extremely difficult for our first responders."

Significant damage was done to the side of the SFD truck from the crash. Queen Anne Avenue North is shut down in the immediate area while the SPD Traffic Collision Investigative Squad processes the scene.

SFD Chief Harold Scoggins said resources and support are available to the firefighters who were on the truck at the time of the crash.
